Impressive early 19th century portrait of the Reverend Thomas Rigby D.D.
Inscribed on verso: "Died 20th Jan. 1815
The Property of Rev'd. Thos. Hollens"
Of interest: the last photo shows a mezzotint held by the National Portrait Gallery in London, England of the same Thomas Rigby in a near identical pose. The mezzotint is by William Say, one of the most prominent engravers of the early 19th century, after the portrait by James Ramsay.
James Ramsay (1789-1854) was born in Sheffield, the son of a painter and art dealer. He exhibited several times with the Royal Academy, including in 1811 when he presented portraits of the Earl of Moira and Lord Cochrane. He has over 25 portraits held in public collections across Britain, including the National Portrait Gallery, Royal College of Physicians and the National Railway Museum.
Could this be the original sitting of The Reverend Thomas Rigby by James Ramsay?
One small repair to back, sitting in a gorgeous antique giltwood frame.
